When compressed air is cooled, the relative humidity increases. As the temperature continues to drop and the relative humidity reaches 100%, water droplets begin to condense out of the compressed air. The temperature at this point is known as the "pressure dew point" of the compressed air

Due to the natural phenomenon of diffusion (where gases flow towards equilibrium), even pressurized air allows moisture from the environment to penetrate into the compressed air system. Moisture enters through numerous connection points in the system, causing the dewpoint to rise. In applications where a low dewpoint is critical at the usage point, this should be considered, and only measuring the dewpoint at the point of use is reliable
